If you want to read lengthy, drawn-out reviews of the movies in theaters now (or soon to be) then this isn't the blog you should be reading. Most of the posts from The Other Critic are short, sweet and to the point; that's how we roll here.

We also don't just focus on current movies. Let's face it, there are plenty of good movies that have been made, and sometimes viewers have a tendency to forget that there is more to life than movies in the theaters.

With all that said, please enjoy the short and concise, and sometimes opinionated reviews. If you don't like them, that's okay—we won't hold it against you.

The Island

A few days ago on Facebook, a few of my friends and I were discussing thrilling movie moments, and somehow Michael Bay and Transformers was brought into the discussion—and not for anything good. They seemed to be of the opinion that the lack of plot and decent acting, substituted with loads of special effects, makes Michael Bay a bad director. I tend to agree with them on this subject when it comes to the quality of the Transformer films, but cut the director a little slack. He's not that bad of a director. I quite enjoyed Bad Boys 1 and Bad Boys 2, and The Island—which this rather long introduction is about.

The Island is a fantastic sci-fi thriller starring Ewan McGregor and Scarlet Johansen. Captivating and mesmerizing, Michael Bay skillfully introduces us to a world of child-like simplicity. As soon as we are immersed in this world, the threads of the tapestry begin to unravel to reveal a world that doesn't exist, and the greed selfishness of human nature rears it's ugly head. Without spoiling the ending, I will tell you that this movie has that "thrilling movie moment" my friends and I were discussing, and thus validates Michael Bay (in my book at least) as a half-way decent director.

Patrick Swayze Marathon

I don't know why I've done this, but lately I've had a craving for Patrick Swayze movies from the 80s and 90s. I think it stemmed from the fact that (hold your breath) I have never seen Dirty Dancing. I know, I know. Shocking. Anyways, here is a brief summary of three of Patrick's movies I watched last week.

Dirty Dancing I actually really enjoyed this movie. It definitely had a Footloose feeling to it, and not really surprising since Dirty Dancing (1987) was made three years after Footloose (1984). I thought it was tastefully done, although I am sure at the time it came out it was super scandalous. Funny how that works isn't it? It was interesting to see the cast and pick out people who continued on to fame, and to see those who fell by the wayside. Good show. I'd watch it again.

Ghost Ah, you know, the first time I saw this movie (a few years back or so), it definitely seemed to be a lot more intense than the last time I watched it. Not sure why that is—maybe the fact that I knew how it ended played a part in it. I think it's a decent show, but it's not one that I'd take down off the shelf and watch just for the heck of it.

Red Dawn I've loved this show since the first time I saw it, even though the acting is typical of acting in 80s movies. Great story and a great cast, both main actors and supporting actors. I was surprised to see a much younger Jennifer Grey (Dirty Dancing) since I had just seen her the other night getting all steamy with Swayze. It was interesting to see Charlie Sheen (Platoon, Young Guns) and Lea Thompson as well (Back to the Future 1-3, Space Camp). Rumor has it (still waiting to see a trailer) that there is going to be a remake of Red Dawn released in 2011. Should be interesting.

Anyways, that's it for the PS Marathon for now. There might be another round in the near future, maybe.

Easy A

Easy A is as much a chick flick as the book The Scarlet Letter is appropriate reading for young teenage girls. While this isn't a remake of the Scarlet Letter (thank goodness), it is a great spin on the idea of it. Be warned, though, the language is a bit rough, especially for a PG-13 movie (another reason this country needs a ratings overhaul).

All in all, I would have to give this movie an A, both for originality, and a superb cast, but knock a few points off for the excessive use of the "s" word. Not a good movie for young teens, in my opinion—best leave this one for the grown ups (and old married couples).

RED

Okay, I have always been a fan of both Bruce Willis and Morgan Freeman—they always bring their A-game when doing films. RED is no exception. What a great film—it's nice to see that the older actors haven't lost touch with what makes movies great—namely, great acting (explosions and gunfire help as well).

Definitely worth seeing at least once. RED did disappoint; I wasn't left feeling blue.

First Impression: Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows Part 1

You can't see this on Apples site yet, only on YouTube—and now here as well. Check out the first official trailer for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 (there is an official part 1 and 2 trailer you can see on this site as well, click here). And for all you wizards itching to see it on your iPhones, click here.

First Impression: The Fighter

Okay, kids. You want to watch the trailer for the Rocky of the the 2000s? Here it is. The Fighter stars Mark Wahlberg, Christian Bale and Amy Adams in this based on a true story, eat your heart out Rocky Balboa crowd pleaser (hopefully, let's keep our fingers crossed). Here's the trailer, and for all you iPhone light-weights, knock yourselves out with the trailer here.

The Karate Kid

Okay, I'm not going to lie when I say I had serious doubts about this film. I love Jackie Chan—just not sure about the young Jaden Smith.

After watching this remake, I can safely say that I really enjoyed it. I love the fact that the story was kept the same, with a few tweaks to really make it seem different. A younger cast, a new setting, and even a "sweep the leg" moment really brought back memories from watching the original The Karate Kid.

Definitely a movie that I will let my kids watch, once it comes out on DVD. Should be out the first part of October.

Resident Evil: Afterlife

Hmm... not sure what to think of this installment of the Resident Evil series. On the one hand, it's Milla Jovovich, along with a few of the cast from the previous RE movie as well as Wentworth Miller (Prison Break). On the other hand, the story seemed to be on the weak side—at one point, towards the end of the film, I felt like I was watching a scene right out of The Matrix.

Unless you're a huge Resident Evil fan, I think it's safe to say that you can skip this one in the theater and wait for it to infect a Redbox near you in a few months.

Frozen

Ah, what ever happened to go story telling when making movies? Seriously. The story line of Frozen (if you can call it that) was everything but compelling and unique. It was like watching a winter time version of Open Water; and if you've seen that movie you know the pain I felt while watching Frozen. Nothing like watching people slowly freeze to death on a ski lift.

Skip this movie and avoid the frostbite you'll get from watching it.

Piranha

#Moviereview #Piranha
Okay, this movie was bad—really, really bad. It's like a bunch of mini-Jaws meets spring breakers. Seriously, I wish I could take back the time I wasted watching this movie. Blah. Don't waste your time with this one, not even when it comes to a Redbox near you.

First Impression: Machete

#Moviereview #trailer #Machete
Ah, there's nothing like a good action-packed, star studded summer shoot-em-up movie—even if it has Steven Segal. Check out the trailer for Machete below. And for all you iPhone users, check it out here.

Predators

#Moviereview #Predators
Meh, Adrian Brody is no Arnold Schwarzenegger. Besides, this story line of dropping humans somewhere to be hunted has been beaten to death. There were some decent actors cast in this film, which surprised me. Predators left wanting me wanting more—but not of this film. Personally, I think they should have stopped with the first one and left it at that.

If watching a small group of ragtag humans being picked off one by one is a part-time hobby of yours, then I'd say wait for it to come to a Redbox near you.

Toy Story 3

#Moviereview #ToyStory3 #Disney #Pixar
The best (and worst) things in life seem to come in threes. So, it's only fitting that the Toy Story saga should come to an end.

This was a wonderful movie—Disney and Pixar have done it again. Great story and animation, combined with the characters we already know and love has made this movie an instant classic. But, unlike the first two movies, I need to point out that this movie was a little more somber in nature—it had it's moments light heartedness, but there's nothing like the joining of hands in memory and friendship when the end is in sight. I was entertained the entire time, and even teared up a few times.

This will definitely be one to get on DVD when it comes out.

Killers

#Moviereview #Killers #AshtonKutcher #KatherineHeigl
Confession time. I am a huge fan of Katherine Heigl, and not so much of Ashton Kutcher, but when I saw them in Killers, well, I think my opinion of Ashton was changed a little—for the worse.

I think this movie had great potential—from the previews Killers looked to be funny, action packed, and even posses a bit of a romantic side. While I was entertained and even laughed more than once, all Killers reminded me of was a cross between Mr. & Mrs. Smith and a poorly constructed James Bond movie. Am I sorry I saw it? No, not really. Would I suggest it to a friend? Yeah, probably—but maybe just as a Redbox rental.

If I had to pick a best part of the entire movie it would definitely have to be Tom Selleck and his mustache.

First Impression: Tangled

#Moviereview #Disney #Tangled
Ah, leave it to Disney to exploit laughter, humor and a good time out of every princess in the land. Tangled definitely looks like it will pack the theaters with young and old alike, as well as make a pretty penny opening weekend. Check out the #trailer below, and for all you #iPhone users, check out all the golden action of the #trailer here.

First Impression: The Green Hornet

#Moviereview #TheGreenHornet
Just when you thought they had run out of movies to make, Hollywood pulls this one out of their sleeve. The Green Hornet looks to please, both with action and adventure, as well as the occasional laugh. Check out the #trailer below, and for all you comic-collecting, #iPhone geeks, check out the trailer here.

First Impression: Resident Evil: Afterlife

#ResidentEvilAfterlife #Moviereview
Okay, here's a First Impression that some of you gamers might enjoy. Resident Evil Afterlife is like the fourth or fifth installment of the Resident Evil movies—seems like there's been quite a few of them made. Check out the #trailer, and for all you #iPhone users, check out the trailer here.

The Last Airbender

Finally. A movie that M. Night Shyamalan couldn't mess up, right? The Last Airbender—when I saw the trailer for this I thought, hey, this might actually be a cool show. Then I saw who was directing it and almost immediately wrote it off as a movie that would be awesome three fourths of the way through and then tank at the end.

I am pleased to be able to say that this wasn't the case. With only a little bit of unconvincing acting, this was a great movie. Awesome adaption from the cartoon that will more than likely span itself into at least two additional movies.

I am looking forward to the next Airbender movie.

Twilight Saga: Eclipse

You can't always base a movie on the book, but I still had high hopes. If you haven't read the previous two books and simply opted to watch Twilight and New Moon, I can easily see how you were disappointed. So, I held my breath when I went with my wife (finally we got to see one of them together) to see Eclipse.

And we weren't disappointed.

By far, and I mean by a long ways, Eclipse what the other two previous movies should have been. Spectacular CGI and action, humor, more meaningful dialog between the main characters—this movie had it all. If I had to pick a best part, or a favorite part, it would have to be the end battle between the newborn vampires and the Cullen/werewolf alliance. The special effects were spot on, and I thought the shattering sound of the newborns was perfect.

They really followed the book closer than the first two movies. The casting was excellent—all but one person, in my opinion. The character of Victoria. I really felt like they dropped the ball when they replaced the actress who played the role of Victoria. While Bryce Dallas Howard is probably a decent actress, for me she just didn't fit the role. Her hair was way too curly, and she appeared to be very juvenile—maybe it's just me, but I think they should have tried to keep the other actress.

Aside from that little hiccup, this was by far the best Twilight movie to date.

A Man Apart

A Man Apart is your typical, run of the mill cop show, but instead of starring Mel Gibson and Danny Glover, it has Vin Diesel and Larenz Tate. The story was good, although nothing new when it comes to cop shows. Main cop and partner are friends, their families are friends, cop looses wife due to the job, goes on a vengeful rampage, gets the bad guy in the end.

All in all, it was intense, action packed and fun to watch.

Six Gun

You know, I've seen a lot of pretty bad movies—bad acting, bad story, bad cast, etc. I think I have just seen my first bad western/cowboy movie. Obviously, this movie didn't have a huge Hollywood budget, but at least they could have tried.

I came close to turning it off several times, but I wanted to see how it ended. Sadly, I can't take back the time I wasted on this movie. All I can do is warn others—bad movie, don't bother with it.

Peaceful Warrior

I remember seeing the previews for this movie a while ago, and I remember telling myself, "That looks like it would be good. I need to see it." Well, I finally did see it—and I was right, it was really good. "Based on true events" is almost as good as a true story bought to life on the big screen—almost. If you're in the mood to watch an inspirational, male gymnastic, Karate Kid wax on, wax off movie, I suggest you pick this on up. You might even be able to get it at the library.

First Impression: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

Finally, there is an official trailer for the last of the Harry Potter movies. It was rumored that they were splitting it into two parts, and so it is. Check out the trailer below, and for all you iPhone wizards—and other smart-phone muggles, check it out here.

First Impression: Rango

Okay, check this out! I saw the announcement for this a few weeks back, but now there's a trailer for it. From Nickelodeon and the director of Pirates of the Caribbean comes Rango. Check out the trailer below—and for you iPhone tumbleweeds, watch it here.

When in Rome

It's been a while since I've seen a good chick-flick, so I picked up When in Rome and watched it with my wife last night. It was a cute show, with a nice cast and a unique story. I was glad there was enough humor in it to balance out the tiny bit of "romantic sap" that there was in the film.

All in all, I would say that this was a good chick flick—not the best out there, but definitely not the worst out there either.

Snakes on a Plane

Okay, I am a big Samuel L. Jackson fan, so this show was pretty painful to watch. Whoever thought the idea of releasing pit vipers from all over the world on a redeye flight half full of passengers was a good idea should not be allowed to do another movie.

Horrible story. Don't bother with it if you haven't seen it.

Remember Me

Remember Me is a heavy drama full of broken family issues, lots of drinking, and a twist ending that is bittersweet, yet strangely appropriate and fitting. That aside, the only draw back I saw to this movie is that the main character is Robert Pattinson (Edward from The Twilight series). I was actually pleasantly surprised with his performance—maybe because he seemed to be in his element with the smoking and drinking. I definitely liked him more in this than in the Twilight series.

The story was depressing and very believable, and the cast fit it like a glove. I was also impressed with Pierce Brosnan's character—best acting I've seen him do in a while. All in all, if you are in the mood for a heavy drama with a twist at the end that caught even me off guard, then Remember Me is the movie for you.

Shrek Forever After

Ah, the green guy is back, along with the rest of the crew—Donkey included. If it is in fact true that this is going to be the last installment of the Shrek movies (which I doubt it will be) this is a good one to go out on.

It seemed that the story took a lot of it's inspiration from the Jimmy Stewart classic, It's a Wonderful Life. This show was full of humor (like always) and a great message about how important family is. My kids enjoyed it, and love to tell each other what their favorite parts are. Worth seeing in the theater, at least once. We will more than likely ad this one to our kids library when it comes out on DVD.

First Impression: Rio

Check out this new film from the creators of the Ice Age. This actually looks really good. Rio won't be in theaters until April of 2011, but it's always nice to see what's coming. Check out the trailer below, and for all you with iPhones, take flight with the trailer here.

First Impression: Takers trailer

Okay, here's a movie that should be good—at least as good as an action packed, summer flick can be. Takers provides work for some good actors, and also some that aren't that great. Check out the trailer below—and for all you iPhoners out there, check it out here.

The A-Team

Where to begin? Honestly, there are so many angles I could come at this film, it's hard to pick even just a few. Let me just first start off by saying this show was freakin' amazing. It was just like the old A-Team show I used to watch as a kid, but with way better effects, story and acting. I was very impressed with the acting of all the main characters—Murdock was by far my favorite.

There was plenty of unrealistic yet totally believable action, tons of humor, and the original A-Team van even made a brief appearance. The best part of the show, in my opinion, is that they showed how the team became a team (before they were fugitives). Amazing, simply amazing.

This is definitely one to see at least once in the theaters—and definitely one I will be buying when it comes out on DVD.

First Impression: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

Goosebumps. That's all I can say about this trailer. Freaking goosebumps. Check it out—and for all you iPhone wizards, watch it here.

Friday, June 4, 2010

First Impression: Gulliver's Travels

Ah, there's nothing better than First Impression Fridays. I thought I'd start today off with Gulliver's Travels, staring Jack Black (and judging by the trailer, Amanda Peet will be in this as well). Check out the trailer, and for all you iPhone giants out there, check it out here.

Monday, May 31, 2010

First Impression: Adjustment Bureau

When I first saw the poster and artwork for this, it seemed like this was going to be another entertaining Matt Damon flick. And what do you know, I was wrong. This actually looks like a great show—definitely one I'll be seeing and reviewing, for sure. Here's the trailer—and for all you iPhone using, sci-fi geeks, check it out here.

Friday, May 21, 2010

First Impression: Jonah Hex

Just watched the trailer for this movie. Looks pretty good—I might give this a go in the theater; after all, it has Megan Fox in it. Check out the trailer (iPhone six shooters click here)

Happy watching!

First Impression: Secretariat

I am a sucker for movies based on true stories, so when I saw the trailer for Secretariat, I got goosebumps. Here's the trailer for it (iPhone jockeys click here).

Robin Hood

Finally, a decent Robin Hood movie that not only sets itself up for a sequel (lets cross our fingers), but gives us the story of how Robin Hood became Robin Hood. Russell Crowe and Ridley Scott have done it again. This is definitely a show that is enjoyable and action-packed, with enough dialogue to give the story substance.

I don't care what others think—this was a great show, worth seeing at least once (in the theater) and will definitely be replacing the copy of Robin Hood Prince of Thieves on my shelf that has about an inch of dust on it.

Avatar

Okay, I finally caved and decided to give Avatar a go, despite all that I have read and heard.

First of all, let me say that I can see why it cost James Cameron $500 million, or so, to create Avatar. Visually, it was amazing. Simply beautiful—a world that could only be created with lots of money and imagination.

Now, let me tackle the issue of the story, or lack thereof. I have heard this from several sources, and I have to agree—the story of Avatar is just a sci-fi version of Dances With Wolves. As much as some might disagree, it's true. I really tried to keep an open mind when I watched this; even with an open mind, it was more than apparent to see that someone wanted to make a political statement about how we are treating the earth, and the ways that some of the worlds early inhabitants were treated.

With all of that said, I am okay with the fact that I didn't see Avatar in the theaters. Visually amazing, but it's the same old story.

Iron Man 2

Okay, I have been reading a lot of the reviews from both critics and movie-goers alike. Seems like most people agree with my thoughts on the movie. It wasn't near as good as the first one and the end fight scene with "the main villain" was over way to quick. Some have made the argument that the demons of Tony Stark were the real villains... please. This is a comic book movie, based on a comic book and not some overly-dramatic Hollywood drama with daddy issues and a lack of self esteem starring strung out, washed up, has-been actors. There is a hero (or heroes) and a villain (or villains), and the good guys win in the end (most of the time).

I thought the special effects and acting were great. The story was pretty good, but overall I felt that the whole thing was very rushed. I hope that when Iron Man 3 comes out, these issues will have been resolved.

Is Iron Man 2 worth seeing in the theater. Most definitely, at least once.

Twilight: Eclipse trailer

It's no big secret that I enjoyed the Twilight series. The movies on the other hand have been not quite up to par (for me, at least). Here's the trailer, judge for yourself (iPhone users click here).

This trailer makes it look good, but like with the other movies in this series, only time will tell.

The A-Team Trailer 2

I am getting really excited for this movie. I will definitely be seeing this one in the theaters, opening night if I can. Here's the second trailer (iPhoners click here).

First Impression: The Black Waters of Echo Pond

So, I just watched this trailer and all I can think about is this is Jumanji for adults. Come on, seriously? I like a good scary movie every now and then, but this... this will be a rental at best.

For those of you with iPhones, check out the trailer here.

Alice in Wonderland

Hmmm...where do I begin with this? Let me first start off that the title for this film is wrong, in my opinion. Agree with me or not, it shouldn't be called Alice in Wonderland. After watching this, I'd have to say that this was more like a continued Alice in Wonderland story with a bit of both of the books (and characters) in it.

Don't get me wrong, I did enjoy the film; I think Tim Burton is one imaginative kid at heart. I thought the special effects were outstanding and the story was captivating. Even my kids enjoyed it. I just have a small problem with the title. Johnny Depp is, as always, a joy to watch as was the rest of the cast.

Good show, except for the title...

How to Train Your Dragon

Once in a while I get to go see movies the opening weekend—it's always fun, especially when it's been looked for a while. How to Train Your Dragon is such a movie. Normally, I would take my whole family to see this show, but this time it was a double date, sans kids.

Of all the things this movie had to offer, I was most impressed with the concept art in the credits. With that said, I must praise the overall story and animation. It was an amazing story to see unraveled on screen. Action, comedy and friendship between two that were supposed to be mortal enemies.

If I had more than two thumbs, they would all be way up in the air.

Thursday, March 25, 2010

Cop Out

Ah, Bruce Willis. I am glad he's still making movies. Cop Out is a witty and enjoyable, if you like movies the likes of the Die Hard and Lethal Weapon series.

Lots of bullets and some typical Bruce Willis veteran cop language meets Tracy Morgan, funny man from 30 Rock. Throw in Seann William Scott and it's a barrel of laughs. Fast paced with nary a dull moment, all 107 minutes of Cop Out flew by. Worth seeing? I think so, but I am a huge Bruce Willis fan.

The best part of this movie was the sweet reference to the old 80s video game—"All your base belong to us."

Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief

I was actually excited to see this one, although I have never read the books. I have always been a huge fan of Greek mythology. Besides having a pretty big cast of well known actors, and some newbies, it also has a pretty decent story. Director Chris Columbus did a good job of melding the new-comers with the veteran actors. Many people might not like it, but then again, I am not part of that crowd.

Simply put, although it will probably not win any awards, there's a spot on my wall of enjoyable movies for Percy Jackson & the Olympians.

In Four Sentences: Brooklyn's Finest

I really enjoyed Antoine Fuqua's movie Training Day with Denzel Washington, even though Training Day was extremely harsh and dark. In Brooklyn's Finest Antoine manages to take Training Day to the next level with more characters and more plot. There is this amazing point in the film about 2/3rds of the way through where everything builds and you think this is it, this is when everything falls apart, but it doesn't, everyone makes the right choice and goes home happy. Then the finale comes and it's 10x more intense and dark and incredible, like watching things fall apart in an epic Emmerich movie, only this time it's people's lives falling apart.

First Impression: Tron Legacy

When I first heard about the remake of the Tron movie, I had mixed feelings—especially in a day and age when remaking the old classics is turning out to be the norm. After seeing the trailer, my nerves are settled. It's not a complete remake of the 1982 classic (view the 1982 trailer here), but seems to be more a continuation of the story. Glad they decided to cast Jeff Bridges again. Here's the trailer (iPhone users click here).

First Impression: Twilight Eclipse

For all you Twi-hards out there who haven't seen the trailer (more like a teaser, if you ask me) here it is (for all you on the iPhone, click here). Enjoy.

This promises to be as good, or better than New Moon. We'll see if it lives up to it.

Thursday, March 11, 2010

In Four Sentences: Alice in Wonderland

After thinking about it for a while, I'd describe Alice in Wonderland like Chronicles of Narnia meets Pan's Labyrinth. Tim Burton really went off the deep end (in a really good way) with the visuals, but it lacked his darkness. This was a surprisingly tame telling of a story with very gruesome elements, the red queen has a moat of all the chopped heads, really nasty stuff. Overall though it had that heart and soul we come to expect and love from Tim Burton, worth the trip.

Wednesday, March 10, 2010

From Paris with Love

I confess, I am a John Travolta fan—but only when the movie is right. In From Paris with Love, Travolta's character is memorable to a fault. Jonathan Rhys Meyers plays a young agent who gets teamed up with a veteran agent who lives life on the edge and bends almost all the rules in the book. I love the the tagline "Two agents. One city. No merci."

Aside from some rough language (thanks to Mr. Travolta) and some violence (mostly shoot 'em up), this was a great flick. I do wished they would have carried the vase through the entire film, though. That would have been funny.

Tuesday, March 9, 2010

Old Dogs

Disney has done it again. Take a great cast of characters, including a small appearance by the late Bernie Mac, throw in some good laughs and a great message about the importance of family and you get Old Dogs.

Robin Williams and John Travolta are funny. Toss in a red-headed Seth Green and it's a party. There are more laughs than what you see in the trailer, and that's always a good thing. It's got a good message as well—always nice to watch a show like that. This is one that I would recommend as at least a Redbox rental for the family.

Monday, March 8, 2010

The Tooth Fairy

I had the opportunity to see The Tooth Fairy this weekend with my kids. I didn't really have any great expectations going into it—I just hoped it would be decent and entertain the kids. Disney came through once again. The kids loved it, and I enjoyed it as well. In my opinion, the best part of the entire show was Billy Crystal's part, although it was small. He reminded me a lot of the character he played in The Princess Bride.

Great show with an even better message. Definitely worth seeing.

Friday, March 5, 2010

First Impression: The Karate Kid

Okay, if you're as old as me, you will remember the original Karate Kid with Ralph Macchio and the whole "wax on, wax off". Take a look at the new Karate Kid staring Jaden Smith (son of Will Smith) and Jackie Chan. For all of you with iPhones, check it out here.

This will definitely be one that I will take my kids to see, right after they watch the original one.

Hancock

I watched this yesterday. I've seen it once or twice before, but never reviewed it. I think it deserves a review.

Hancock is not Will Smith's best movie, by far. But, it is not his worst movie, either. I really liked the concept of it, though. Very well thought through. There are a lot of movies with superheroes that are all powerful and have no worries or cares except helping out the human race. In this movie (if you haven't seen it) the roles are really reversed. This time, it's a superhero that is in need of help, and someone realizes that and does something about it.

Aside from some pretty rough language, I really liked this show.

Where the Wild Things Are

When I saw that they were making a movie based on Where the Wild Things Are, I thought to myself this is definitely going to go one of two ways. Either it's going to be awesome—like the memories I have of the book from childhood—or it's going to bomb.

Unfortunately, I found the 101 minute film to drag on slower than The Ten Commandments. It had it's moments, but all in all, I wasn't really a fan. There were things in there that I can see being very scary for kids, plus I can see it hitting very close to home with some children based on feelings of being alone and feeling neglected.

Again, I didn't really care for it, although I am sure there are some out there that would disagree, and that's fine.

Cirque du Freak: The Vampires Assistant

So, John C. Riley as a vampire. Well, he is no Edward Cullen, but then again, this isn't Twilight. I was pretty skeptical when I saw the previews for this show - let's be honest, John C. Riley as a vampire. I thought he only did comedy.

With all those doubts plaguing my mind, I popped in the DVD and gave it a shot. Sure enough, there was John C. Riley as a vampire, taking refuge in a traveling freak show. It was a comedy - but not a normal slap your knee, talk about it the next day with your friends comedy. It was definitely more of a dark comedy; well, maybe a really dark gray comedy.

I was actually pleasantly surprised with this film. I did have my doubts, but like a vampire in sunlight, those doubts turned to ash and blew away. The cast and supporting cast was actually surprising to me. I was wondering what ever happened to Orlando Jones. Now I know.

Edge of Darkness

So, Mel Gibson's back. In this gritty police detective drama, Mel is no spring chicken—like in the Lethal Weapon series—but don't hold that against him.

Edge of Darkness is gritty. It's dark and full of emotion. The action, in between the talking parts, was extreme and well done; very realistic and down to earth. I enjoyed the conspiracy theories intertwined with the story, very well done, in my opinion.

Gritty and dark, but very well done with an ending that leaves you with a small, warm fuzzy.

Couples Retreat

I just finished watching Vince Vaugn in Couples Retreat. I was pleasantly surprised. I knew it was going to be funny (I can't actually think of a movie that he's done that wasn't funny). The story was just as good as the message. There were a few parts that were definitely PG-13, but all-in-all it was good. I would not recommend this for children, or even pre-teens. It is definitely for couples.

The best part of the whole movie is the beginning. If you are fortunate enough to have children, you'll be able to relate.

The Book of Eli

I had the chance to see this in the theaters last Saturday night with a good friend of mine. We were originally going to see the new Mel Gibson movie or Legion. I still have interest to see both of those movies, even with the poor reviews Legion is getting., but we compromised and saw The Book of Eli.

Let me say this about the movie: if I had three thumbs, they'd all be up in favor of this movie. It was amazing, in an odd sort of a way. Granted, it wasn't non-stop action from the beginning, but when there was action, it was solid. The story and concept for the movie were equally impressive. Very well thought through, with just the right amount of twists to really make it interesting. And the ending. Wow. I never saw that coming, but once it was there, it really drove home how much we take everyday things for granted.

Definitely worth the time, definitely worth the price. Great movie.

First Impression: Ghost Writer

Might as well start this day off with a bang. Today's First Impression is Ghost Writer staring Ewan McGregor and Pierce Brosnan. Here's the trailer (iPhone users click here)

It looks like a really good thriller with at least one or two possible twists before the truth is discovered.

Twilight: New Moon

Okay, so I know there are a lot of guys out there that don't like this series, for a number of reasons. I can't blame them if they base their whole Twilight experience on watching the first movie—it really was awful.

But, with New Moon, it really is a totally—and much better—viewing experience. Sure, there will always be little flaws here and there that don't coincide with the book exactly, but give them a break. At least no major flaws appear in this movie like in the last—remember where James bit Bella in the book? On the hand, between the thumb and index finger—not on the wrist.

Anyways, with much better CGI on the wolves, a better sparkle on Edward, and a better director, I can say that this was easily 500% better than the first movie. Of course, there will still be "haters" out there—and that's their problem.

Up In the Air

Okay, to be honest with, I didn't think I was going to like this movie. Half way through it, I am wondering to myself, "Why am I even watching this?". To be fair, I finished it; anyone who knows me is well aware that I rarely don't finish a movie, even if it bad.

I like George Clooney, I think he's a great actor. Sometimes I wonder about the movies he chooses to do, though. With Up In the Air, I was really wondering—did he owe back taxes? But get this. The best part of the whole movie was the ending. Not that I was happy that the movie ended—I am talking about the actual ending, the core message of the whole movie. It was great. I was pleasantly surprised.

So, I guess it is possible to have a bad movie with a good ending, although I would have preferred it to have been a better movie in the first place.

First Impression: The Bounty Hunter

Okay, this First Impression is a really good one. Gerald Buttler and Jennifer Aniston in The Bounty Hunter. Definitely one I am going to see. (iPhone users click here)

This one is going to be a definite one to see. Look for it to be in theaters March 19, 2010.

First Impression: Grown Ups

Okay, I feel like I've been slacking a little with this, and so, since it's Friday, I thought I'd give you a couple. Going to try and do them in separate posts so I can have the movie title in the post title—just trying to streamline the process and make it easier to find stuff.

The first First Impression is Grown Ups that boasts a huge comedic cast including Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Chris Rock, Rob Schneider, and David Spade. Here's the trailer (iPhone users click here)

Looks like a funny movie, but time will tell—this comes out June 25, 2010.

The Men Who Stare at Goats

Whatever you do, don't watch this movie while under the influence of drugs.

This was an interesting movie, to say the least. I guess you'd need to like conspiracy theories in order to really appreciate this movie. I enjoyed the cast—Jeff Bridges was especially great, as was Kevin Spacey. The concept was interesting, although I like more of a definitive story/plot to follow. One of the best parts was the Boston song song at the end. Love good music in movies.

Not sure I'd buy it, but it was definitely worth seeing at least once.

The Lovely Bones

For some reason, I only briefly recall the trailer for this show. Not sure why, though.

I'm not going to beat around the bush. I expected more from Peter Jackson (King Kong, The Lord of the Rings trilogy). While this was a good movie, it wasn't what I have come to expect from Mr. Jackson. The story was good, as well as the acting. I did enjoy the way that "the in between" was portrayed. The ending—let's just say I wanted more closure than I got.

Also, after watching this, I am never going to let my kids walk home from school. Ever.

Daybreakers

Ready for this? Daybreakers, the newest vampire-based movie to hit the big screen, is awesome. Starring Ethan Hawke (Training Day), this vampire movie is set in the near distant future where due to a virus, vampires and humans have switched places—that is to say that the vampire population far outnumbers the human one.

Being a fan of the vampire genre, I really enjoyed Daybreakers, even the fact that the humans were still using modified crossbows as a main defense against the vampires. The story was unique enough to keep my attention, which is always a plus. Visually, the movie was awesome. I really like it when movies are filmed in that sort of mono-chromatic way—very fitting for this movie.

One funny thing, and this is pure speculation, about Ethan Hawke's character—his name is Edward. Now, I don't know if that was done on purpose to spite the Twilight fans or if it was purely accidental, but it gave me a good chuckle.

I think this is a movie that a lot of people will be able to sink their teeth into, and enjoy at the same time. I know I did.

The A-Team Teaser Trailer

Okay, I finally found a half decent copy of the A-Team trailer. Apparently (according to rumor, that is) this trailer was leaked prematurely and that the company had it pulled. The company said they would be releasing the official trailer sometime soon—no word as to when, though. Hope it's soon, cause this movie is due out June 11.

Here's the trailer.

Got to say, after watching the trailer outside of Youtube, I am liking this movie more and more. Watch it a few times and pay close attention to the ending...

The A-Team: The Movie

Oh holy cow! I just saw a bit on the up-coming movie The A-Team based on the hit 80s television show. I am planning a midnight showing for this one for sure. I'll post the trailer as soon as I can.

Sherlok Holmes

Brilliant! If you get to see one movie in the theaters the first part of the new year, skip the rest and see Sherlock Holmes.

Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law are amazing. It was visually stunning accompanied by a story that kept me guessing the whole time. My favorite parts were the fight scenes - if you've seen it you know what I mean. If you haven't seen it, take the day off (if you can) and go see a matinee.

From start to finish (loved the first part of the credits as well) I really, really enjoyed this show. Even better, it seems lime they left this one open for a follow up Sherlock Holmes 2. Who knows?

P.S. I Love You

Ah, love was in the air with this romantic drama until the leading man (played by Gerald Butler) dies. This isn't a spoiler, I am sure the back of the DVD will tell you the same thing.

This was a great show, especially if you're in the mood for a flick that will bring tears to your eyes - and not just once, but over and over again. I thought the story was very unique and very well brought to life by the cast. Kathy Bates was amazing. And to top things off, the ending was perfect.

Now, there may be some people who don't agree with me on whether or not this was a good show, or if the ending was perfect or if the actors did a good job, but guess what?

P.S. I still think it's a great show.
